Our Teaching Techniques
How do we use Scaffolding
6 Step-process
1. More knowledgeable other demonstrates
2. Less knowledgeable other follows with guidance
3. Less knowledgeable other does independently (prompting, hinting, feedback, encouraging, praising)
4. Less knowledgeable other is now the more knowledgeable other but may be encouraged to further extend learning (feedback/ suggestion)
5. As the more knowledgeable other, he teaches a less knowledgeable other (feedback, praising)
6. The process continues (feedback, praising, suggestion)
How do we use Demonstration
1. Use clear and unambiguous verbal instructions
2. Break a skill or task into small, sequential steps
3. Allow time for children to observe and “listen in”
4. Keep demonstration brief (because children
have short attention span)
How do we use Questioning Techniques
1. Open-ended questions
2. Close-ended questions
3. Leading questions
4. Choice questions
5. Funnelling
How do we provide Guidance
1. Giving choices to develop a sense of autonomy.
2. Using humour to take away the attention.
3. Making verbal and non-verbal messages agree.
How do we use Documentation
1. Transcribing children's comments and observations
2. Making Written observations of children's work
3. Photographing children's work, including the use of digital camera photographs of children's work
